A Vivid Reminder of TB and Why We Need to Act Swifty to Control it

This documentary illustrates why we need to focus on development of new measures to effectively diagnose, treat and prevent TB. It is also a reminder that what the world community is doing right now is far from adequate.

WHY IS TUBERCULOSIS IMPORTANT?

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by 'Mycobacterium tuberculosis'. This bacterium is transmitted when a person with active TB coughs/sneezes. Treatment of TB requires multiple drugs to be taken daily for months. We are slowly losing our arsenal of drugs to treat this global disease. Our mission is to develop a new drug to treat TB.

Gyanu Lamichhane: My current efforts are aimed at understanding fundamental biology of the bacterial peptidoglycan layer and to translate these findings to develop inhibitor of biosynthesis of this vital bacterial 'organelle'. I have established a scientific program titled 'Taskforce to study Resistance Emergence & Antimicrobial development Technology' (TREAT) that comprises of multiple labs around the world. Our aim is to understand the genetic and biochemical basis of resistance to B-lactam drugs and to develop more potent drugs of this class.
